Left Behind

The Moose fears that the true believers are missing the rapture.

The vaunted Norquist/conservative "leave us alone" coalition is apparently being left behind. The coalition was forged in the notion that government stay out of the business of Americans. However, this new big government crew can't find a nook or cranny of American life that is exempt from their prying nose. And the leader of this once heralded coalition weeps,

"Advocates of using federal power to keep this woman alive need to seriously study the polling data that's come out on this," said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, who has been talking to both social and economic conservatives about the fallout. "I think that a lot of conservative leaders assumed there was broader support for saying that they wanted to have the federal government save this woman's life."

The Bushies and the DeLayicans are big government conservatives on steroids. The folks over at Heritage and Cato should conduct hearings. Their threat level should have been elevated when the Bushies rose tariffs and expanded the corporate welfare state with the passage of the Medicare drug bill. Apparently, small government conservatives are abandoned in the corporatist conservative rapture.

While the limited government types are languishing in purgatory or worse, the corporate types are in big money heaven. Yesterday's Washington Post,

"Fortune 500 companies that invested millions of dollars in electing Republicans are emerging as the earliest beneficiaries of a government controlled by President Bush and the largest GOP House and Senate majority in a half century."

It is evident that Republican rule is not about principle, but rather raw power. With the probable collapse of social security privatization, W. will likely leave office in '09 having failed to accomplish any significant domestic reform and greatly expanding the scope of federal power along with a huge government debt. Contrast that record to Clinton who left office with balanced budgets and welfare reform.

Maybe, old Grover should launch a campaign to name BWI Airport after William Jefferson Clinton, a genuine conservative hero!
