The Moose asserts that Tom DeLay is as clever as he is corrupt.
At a time when some of his colleagues are headed for the tall grass, the Bug Man is smiling like a Cheshire cat. While House Republicans are attempting to repair their image by reviving the Ethics Committee, DeLay is the W's guest on Air Force One.
And evidently, Casino Jack Abramoff didn't even have to pick up the tab!
Tom DeLay has out-maneuvered the Boy Genius, Karl Rove. DeLay, perhaps more than Rove, comprehends the adage, "Live by the base, die by the base." By attaching himself to the right wing true believers, the Bug Man has made himself bullet-proof to establishment attempts to undermine his rule.
While observers may deem DeLay's attacks on the judiciary over the top, there is a method to this madness. Delay has successfully tied the right's fate to his.
So much so that the most powerful man in the world is forced to succumb to DeLay's plan. With his popularity faltering, W cannot antagonize his most faithful believers - even if it may come at a political cost. Explaining the risks in the DeLay association, Mike Allen writes in the Washington Post,
"Bush has no connection to the issues surrounding DeLay's controversies, but one of the lobbyists whose credit card was charged for part of DeLay's trip was a major fundraiser for the president's reelection. Jack Abramoff raised more than $100,000 for Bush in 2004 and had close ties to his Interior Department. In addition, investigators are looking into a $4 million payment that Abramoff made to lobbyist Ralph Reed, a key player in the president's reelection operation who raised more than $300,000 for Bush's two presidential campaigns. Two people close to Bush said the entire party will suffer if the controversy spreads and become a major issue with the public."
Speaking on behalf of the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy*, the Moose is loving this. The Republican Party is now in this together with DeLay.
