Veterans Day

The Moose thanks those brave Americans who made this day possible.

Although Veterans Day is a few days away, we should today express our appreciation and gratitude to the veterans and currently serving members of the armed services who have defended and continue to preserve our freedom. They put their lives on the line so that we can stand in line to choose our leaders.

Much has been made of the nasty politics in this election season. The truth is that we have suffered through negative campaigns since the beginning of the Republic. And we have survived.

Starting tomorrow, however, our country would greatly benefit from the emergence of a New Patriotic Center comprised of leaders from both parties who put country before party. While there are important differences, the ideological divide between the Democrats and Republicans is not as wide as the divisions between parties in other countries. After all, the true extremist parties that thrive in other parts of the world are on the fringe here. Let us vote for the candidates of our choice. But, let's not allow our differences blind us from what we have in common as Americans.

The vibrant give and take of our elections, and our democracy itself would not be possible without the extraordinary sacrifice of the brave Sailors, Soldiers, Marines and Airmen and their families. Amidst our cynicism about politics, our troops are the true idealists about our democracy.

As we go into the voting booth, we take far too much for granted. But, thousands of miles away from our safe precincts are Americans in dangerous distant lands who are risking their lives so that we can exercise the rights of free men and women.

So, this election, like all others, are brought to you by the sacrifice of our heroic troops. God bless them.
